Hawaiian Girl
  • Hawaiian Girl

This was one of the first drawings I made after putting down the Wacom pen and picking up a piece of charcoal. It is based on an image from my personal archive for which I have always felt a special fascination, but that was incompatible with the photomontages I have made so far.

The printed photograph of this Hawaiian Girl (by Caroline Haskins Gurrey, dating from 1909) is quite heavily deteriorated, showing lighter patches and scratches. I chose to incorporate the partly atrophied physicality of the vintage photograph into the drawing.
